Snell Knot

Snell Knot

Impala is proud to share the third article in our very own Know Your Knots How To Series: a step-by-step guide, tried and tested by the Impala Angling Club, to master the art of tying a hook to a line with the Snell Knot.

Since 1965, the Impala Angling Club has been at the forefront of angling, fostering a family-oriented environment and nurturing the next generation of anglers. Our club boasts various previous and current provincial and national anglers, serving as a gateway to representing a province or even the country.

Step-by-Step Guide to Tying the Snell Knot

Step 1: Pull the Line Through the Eye of the Hook

Start by threading the line through the eye of the hook. Ensure you leave enough line on the tag end to complete the knot.

Step 2: Fold the Line Around the Hook

Fold the line back down around the shank of the hook, creating a loop.

Step 3: Wrap the Line Around the Hook 7 or More Times

Wrap the looped line around the shank and the standing part of the line at least seven times. Make sure the wraps are neat and lay on top of each other.

Step 4: Pull the Line Right Through (Holding the Loop)

Hold the looped end and pull the standing part of the line to tighten the wraps around the shank.

Step 5: Pull the Second Line Through the Eye of the Hook

Pull the second line (tag end) through the eye of the hook, ensuring the wraps remain tight and secured.

Step 6: Trim the Longer Parts Off

Finally, trim any excess line from both ends to finish.

By mastering the Snell Knot, you not only secure your hook more reliably but also enhance your overall angling skills, ensuring a stronger connection between your line and hook. This knot is particularly useful for ensuring your bait presents naturally underwater, increasing your chances of a successful catch. Take pride in knowing you’ve adopted a technique honed by seasoned anglers, giving you an edge on your fishing adventures. Happy fishing from everyone at Impala Angling Club!
